Flying into Kilimnjaro: Different Airports and travel strategies. The Tanzanian towns of Moshi and Arusha are the main starting points for any Kilimanjaro adventure.

Updated: Aug 19, 2025

Bustling with activity, most tour operators have their base in one of these places, and there are plenty of good accommodation options, restaurants, shops, and markets. Moshi is closer to the international airport (JRO), about 40 minutes by road, where the city of Arusha is around 90 minutes away. Our favorite airline is Qatar airways to get into JRO and they are usually on point with luggage and timing/delays. If you can avoid Ethiopian airlines due to older systems, planes, and lack of flexible options with lost luggage, please do so as we are speaking from personal experience.

Here's a breakdown of how to get to Moshi or Arusha:

  • International Flights: There are some direct flights from Europe (Amsterdam and Zurich) and the Middle East (Doha and Turkey) to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). However, it is more likely that you will need to fly through another African city, such as Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Addis, or Nairobi.

  • Airlines with direct flights to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) include KLM, Condor Air, Turkish Airlines, Kenya Airways, Precision Air, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, and RwandAir.

  • Flights to Nairobi, Kenya: Nairobi is a popular option as it receives a lot more air traffic than Kilimanjaro Airport, leading to competitive prices. You can then travel by road from Nairobi to Moshi town or the city of Arusha, although the roads can be rough.

Here are some additional considerations for your Mount Kilimanjaro travel:

  • Visa and Passport Requirements: Make sure to check your visa and passport requirements well in advance of your booking, including any visa requirements for transit countries. Make sure your passport wont expire for at least 6 months after the last day of your trip.

  • Vaccinations: Ensure you are up to date with vaccinations, including Yellow Fever, particularly if you have a layover in a country at risk.

  • Buffer Days:  We recommend arriving a couple of days ahead of your climb to allow for any unexpected delays and give you an opportunity to be properly rested before the start of your climb.
