Conquering Kilimanjaro? Don't Forget Your Visa! Understand the visa process and apply early.

Updated: Oct 8, 2024

So you've booked your Kilimanjaro climb, packed your bags (check out our ultimate packing guide!), and booked your flights. But wait! Before you jet set to conquer the "Roof of Africa," there's one crucial detail: your visa.

Don't worry, getting a Tanzanian visa is easier than summiting Uhuru Peak (hopefully!). Here's a quick rundown on everything you need to know:

Visa on Arrival? You Got It!

For most nationalities, entering Tanzania is a breeze. You can simply grab your visa upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Dar es Salaam International Airport, Zanzibar International Airport, or several land border crossings.

How Much Will It Cost?

  • U.S. Citizens:  $100 USD (multiple entry valid for one year) - Bargain! HikeTalkStay offers affordable daypacks perfect for exploring Tanzania after your climb (around $30-$50 USD).

  • Non-U.S. Citizens: It depends! You can choose between a single entry visa valid for six months ($50 USD) or a double-entry visa valid for six months ($100 USD).

Remember, Cash is King!

These visa fees need to be paid in cash, so make sure you have enough Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) on hand.

Skip the Lines, Apply Online!

Feeling tech-savvy? You can now apply for your Tanzanian visa online! This is a great option if you want to avoid any last-minute airport hassles. Check out the official Tanzania Immigration Services website: [link to Tanzania eVisa website https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa]

What Else Do I Need?

  • Valid Passport: Make sure your passport has at least six months validity remaining from your arrival date and a blank page for the visa stamp.

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Card:  If you're coming from a country with a risk of yellow fever, you'll need to show proof of vaccination.

  • Proof of Onward Travel:  Have your return flight or onward travel ticket handy – immigration officials might ask to see it.

  • Proof of Sufficient Funds:  While not always requested, it's a good idea to have some cash or a credit card statement handy to show you can support yourself during your trip. Most of our customers carry between 1000-1500.00 in cash for tips, souvenirs and incidentals

Double-Check Before You Go!

Visa requirements can change, so always check with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your home country before your trip. Here are some helpful resources:

Don't let a visa snag hold you back! With a little planning and these handy tips, you'll be scaling Kilimanjaro in no time. Now get out there and conquer that mountain!
